History
Alba Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was established in 1897. In the very early years circuit-riding preachers served Alba. During this time church services were held in the multi-purpose building at the corner of Kirby Street and Mockingbird Street. This building served as a school, meeting hall, and church. Several different denominations used the building for church services. In 1904 men from the First Alba Methodist Church tore down the old First Methodist Church in Winnsboro. The pieces of lumber were numbered and moved by wagon to Alba and reassembled. This church was located in the south part of town at the west end of Mockingbird Street and served as a church until 1914. In 1914 a new church and parsonage was built at the current location on Holley Street. Alba had a growth spurt between 1900 and 1940 with the Coal and Cotton industries booming. A newspaper article in the Alba Reporter, in 1921, reported First Alba Methodist Church had 91 for Sunday school. About 1940 Alba began to see a loss in population with the closing of the mines and the decline of the cotton market.
In 1946 First Methodist Church of Golden, with a decrease in membership, voted to join with Alba and share a pastor. This was known as the Alba-Golden charge. With new growth in the Golden area in 1953, First Methodist of Golden decided they needed their own pastor. Alba also experienced new growth at this time due to the discovery of oil. The men of Alba Methodist Church built a new fellowship hall in Alba in 1953. In 1954 the Alba pastor was appointed to serve Alba and Pleasant Ridge Methodist church. The pastor continued to serve both churches until 1965 when the members of Pleasant Ridge voted to close the church there and move their membership to Alba First United Methodist Church. In 1965, with declining membership in both churches, Alba and Golden again decided to share a pastor. This became the Golden-Alba charge. In 1989 Alba United Methodist Church tore down the old parsonage and built a new sanctuary on the spot. In 1991 the old sanctuary was torn down and a new fellowship hall was built where it once sat. At that same time, the Alba and Golden churches built together a new parsonage in Golden.
On January 1st, 2004 Alba was appointed a retired pastor and Golden a student pastor. Each church was now it's own charge again. In 2005, our Trustees were able to acquire the property adjacent to the Church to the east. Then in June, 2006, Alba was appointed a part time pastor. In 2007, Alba was joined with Cheatham Memorial UMC in Edgwood to help continue the growth of the church. The Bishop and District Superintendent felt it was important for Alba to have a senior full elder pastor while we work towards acquiring a parsonage and ultimately the posting of a full time pastor residing here in Alba.
In June 2008, Rev. Brannen was moved to a new Church and Alba joined with Emory UMC. We welcomed Rev. Kelly Kone.
